I was listeting to both combinations and found the HP500SE a little wider in stager perception. However, to my knowledge, the 500 was build to complete the MRE130 monos, for the RE280 the 300 would be really finef - i am sure.
Try to listen to them; don't you have a dealer around?
BWT: new equippment tends to sound crappy for a couple days. High end electronics needs some time to equilibrate ... This was especially true for my SBB.
