you can plug any tube having the same base, as there are 6L6 types, EL34, 6650, KT88, KT66 - however you will have to find a quadruplett (or 2 pairs) of tubes with match values within the range the bias system of the V40/70 can deal with. Once you have a pair that fits (green diodes), communicate these values to the provider in your upcoming orders. I have Svetlana 6550C, with an ECC83 from Svetlana too and Tungsram ECC88 (old). Sound depends on everything, also speaker etc. so play around with it.
Black box is an option in the V40 (it's not the super black box though), but why not geting an external device like the Burmester Power Conditioner? - i did.
Don't know about the other question, I think the device is simply best just to listen musik with it. When I buy amps I also buy boxes, CD player - it's more of a chain thing rather than of single device or tube question.
