Cable technologies are so varied you can get blind from all of the tests and reports. I have learned from experience that effects of cables are related to:

1) CAPACITANCE: If the cables are moved around and you have longer cables from the preamp to the amps you will have more increased capacitance reducing normally the upper tone ranges. If you notice that you lost some of the high end signal because you moved to a longer cable, it is not the cable, it is the effect of the capacitance. A lower PF, such as 12pf/ meter is better than one at 30pf/meter, having said that, you can add resistors to the longer cables to bring the capacitance down to normal levels with shorter cables. One also needs to look at the output impedance of the preamp to the amps, the lower the better. This will diminish the effect of having longer cables.

2)WRONG REASONS: I see too many people switching the cables for the wrong reasons, some people lose some high end frequency due to a longer cable and try to fix it with silver cable, yet with the silver cable you lose some of the natural resonance of the piano and trumpet frequencies for the sake of better sparkle of the cymbals.

3) CABLE MATCHING: The best idea is to match the cables to the equipment and determine the capacitance pf/m for the entire cablE length so that you will end of with a good combination. No one will argue that Valhalla's are good cables for longer length's, because they have really low capacitance, on the other hand do you need Vallhalla's for only 1-3 meters of cable with normal cables? I do not think so if you match the components. I use Neotechs NA 12260 for my IC's and they are the most natural sounding cable I have demoed on my system. Pure silver has more shimmer, but loses the natural tones of the piano and trumpet...and I can relate to both, I play both instruments. Silver provides razor sharp definition, but does it really bring you closer to the music? I lose the natural sound of the piaon with pure silver, so it does not work for me.

Cables can be sorted out easily if you know the technical parameters of your equipment, output impedance, how long the cables are, how much the pf/m is, this will help you determine the cables that will have the least effect on the system and on the music.

You can save a lot of money or spend a lot money on cables, but in the end whatver you do, if it is not the right cable, it wil not sound right in a high end or lower priced system.

: Hallo allerseits..
